When one thinks of the well regarded poet soldiers of World War I one thinks first of Wilfred Owen Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves Not as freuently mentioned is David Jones who many consider the best of the poets to come out of the war and whose verse novel In Parenthesis most think is the finest work written about the warThomas Dilforth's superlative biography David Jones in the Great War covers the period of Jones's wartime service and how it influenced his post war life and art He served in the army longer than any other writer who experienced time in the trenches and his service included the horrendous battles of the Somme and Passchendaele Jones differed from the others we most commonly associate with the war's poetry because he spent his entire service as a private in infantry units whereas the others were for the most part junior officers In telling the story of Jones's time in the army Dilforth describes in great detail what day to day life was like in those units stationed in the trenches and how the mundane as well as the chaos of battle were used by Jones as sources for his visual art and his poetry Probably for meand certainly the primary aim of the biographyis that it explains how Jones's experiences were transformed into one of the century's great modernist works In ParenthesisIn his Introduction Dilforth discusses how calling his biography David Jones and the Great War would have reuired a book much larger in scope than David Jones in the Great War By focusing on Jones rather than having to explain the great events he was part of Dilforth is able to show how the art came to be expressed as it was It's a rich story and the confidence with which the biographer handles his material amplifies the value of his telling Jones finished his training as a draftsman and artist shortly before the war started The biography is illustrated throughout with drawings Jones made of the front used by Dilforth to richly support his text

This a wonderful book about a great human being who survived 3 years in the trenches and went on to write one of the greatest poems about WW1 It is extensively illustrated by DJ's beautiful sketches made juring the conflict

On a second reading I'm still impressed I'm also struck by Dilworth's use of second person it makes it sound as though he were there in the trenches and is telling you the reader what it was like First readingDilworth is strong on statements both about the stature of Jones and his work and about Thomas Dilworth and his work 'In Parenthesis' is the the greatest work of Literature on the Great War and arguably the greatest work on War in English217 'The Anathemata' may well be the greatest modern long poem and the most important single work of British Modernism 218 The 'may well' and 'arguably' are familiar protective critical moves but Dilworth feels no need of them when he informs his readers of the latter work the most thorough interpretation is my 'The Shape of Meaning in the poetry of David Jones'my 'Reading David Jones' contains the clearest summary of the poem 218This is no bad thing poets needs patrons and partisans and publishers and Jones is often overlooked in standard histories of twentieth century poetry 'In Parenthesis is a stunning performance; the debate over whether it's prose or poetry has to remain open for a variety of good reasons Dilworth shuts the door on the debate it's a poem But by his criteria so is 'Ulysses' The daunting nature of 'The Anathemata' probably leaves few readers willing to argue for or against Dilworth's superlatives but if Jones is going to have his dues someone has to make these claims for him so he gets noticed in a poetry world besotted with the Ted Hughes brigade I read this book at one sitting Dilworth writes clear readable prose If you have read 'In Parenthesis' then you will find 'David jones and the Great War' fascinating and useful But while it's a record of Jones' war service it also works uietly to argue a case for Jones the writer Literary critics have claimed that In Parenthesis is not credible as the perspective of an infantry private in the first world war How they decide such things only they know Dilworth's first chapter shows how precocious Jones' reading was as a child and young man before the war the book records the odd meetings conversations and correspondences which were suggestive of the links Jones would make explore and exploit in his own writing Leaving aside some proof reading errors the book is beautifully produced Enitharmon press produce fine books and contains reproductions of Jones' war time sketches The book is announced as the precursor to a full length biography which Dilworth is writing and that is something to look forward to
