Yeah, I read this and listened to several cast recordings including the movie recording I still don t know why people gush about this musical about a failed filmmaker failing to make a film Nine seems like a sloppy, mismatched, clunky show to me Overall, this experience is like trying to say something about clothing design through the medium of soup making Both fashion and soup are good, but they re entirely different mediums A musical about a filmmaker struggling to make a cinematic mast Yeah, I read this and listened to several cast recordings including the movie recording I still don t know why people gush about this musical about a failed filmmaker failing to make a film Nine seems like a sloppy, mismatched, clunky show to me Overall, this experience is like trying to say something about clothing design through the medium of soup making Both fashion and soup are good, but they re entirely different mediums A musical about a filmmaker struggling to make a cinematic masterpieceunless you can figure out how to put the cinema up on stage projection, maybe , you re kind of missing the point.Nine is a middling musical based on Federico Fellini s wonderful classic flick 8 When the Italian master made the original in 1963, he was artistically stuck, cobbling together a messy story about a writer director who had writer s block We experience Fellini s obvious visual genius, even in the midst of his self referential bumbling. So why make a musical about this I ve never figured that out It seems the uniqueness of 8 was Fellini s fearless revelation about his own life, combined with his willingness to try anything But it was a film about a filmmaker told in the medium of film How can you make the art of filmmaking into a stage musical Hell if I know I think the songs are cute but not earth shattering , and some moments like the wife s revelation are awesome But as a while, I ve never understood why people think this works on stage There s nothing cumulative about this.Is it possible to make a musical about another artistic medium Yes, Sunday in the Park with George does it beautifully, but at the same time, Sondheim and Lapine have Seurat in the process of creating the famous painting on stage The painting takes over the stage in a clever way that marries the musical to the work of art That s what I mean by cumulative That makes it theatrical If in Nine the famous filmmaker created something we could see as cinematic, maybe this would work for me like it obviously does with others

Not one of the better musicals I ve read Maybe, I just need to watch it The layout seemed confusing and there was no real flow from song to song It might be fun to play the mother or Mama Maddalena though.

Aside from one or two songs, I find this show very outdated and unnecessary.

Yeston and Kopit s Nine is one of the best written musicals of the late twentieth century, but it helps not to be too close to the source material Frederico Fellini, one of the most revolutionary filmmakers of the 1960s, inspired this musical, loosely based on his 8 1 2 But while 8 1 2 and the film version of Nine are rooted strongly in 1960s Italy, the stage musical seems to take steps back a few decades, rooting auteur Guido Contini in the era of 1920s and 1930s film epics and the at Yeston and Kopit s Nine is one of the best written musicals of the late twentieth century, but it helps not to be too close to the source material Frederico Fellini, one of the most revolutionary filmmakers of the 1960s, inspired this musical, loosely based on his 8 1 2 But while 8 1 2 and the film version of Nine are rooted strongly in 1960s Italy, the stage musical seems to take steps back a few decades, rooting auteur Guido Contini in the era of 1920s and 1930s film epics and the attendant cultural era Attempts in the film to update the show to Contini Fellini s actual era were mixed Funny, tragic and surreal, Nine wanders between the worlds of dream, reality, memory and film, before finding that the truth may lie somewhere in between

Better to see on stage, but still a good read.
