Another fascinating biography from Stefan Zweig, I would HIGHLY recommend this book if you decide to attack the d Artagnon books and in particular the incredible Vicomte de Bragelonne which I have reviewed here Fouch played with fire and was burned in the worst way When in France, don t forget to visit Vaux le Vicomte which is the castle that drew the unstoppable and fearful wrath of Louis XIV Another fascinating biography from Stefan Zweig, I would HIGHLY recommend this book if you decide to attack the d Artagnon books and in particular the incredible Vicomte de Bragelonne which I have reviewed here Fouch played with fire and was burned in the worst way When in France, don t forget to visit Vaux le Vicomte which is the castle that drew the unstoppable and fearful wrath of Louis XIV

Simply the best biography written by Stefan Zweig But in reality it s not a biography, it s a novel about the many adventures and plot twists in the life of one of the most extraordinary historical figures that have existed Fouch was involved in the French revolution from the very beginning, he voted the death of the King, then managed to become the chief of Police when monarchy was reinstated, and when monarchy was thrown over by Napoleon, he became MinisterIt s basically a handbook in ho Simply the best biography written by Stefan Zweig But in reality it s not a biography, it s a novel about the many adventures and plot twists in the life of one of the most extraordinary historical figures that have existed Fouch was involved in the French revolution from the very beginning, he voted the death of the King, then managed to become the chief of Police when monarchy was reinstated, and when monarchy was thrown over by Napoleon, he became MinisterIt s basically a handbook in how to navigate through extremely dangerous political times

An interesting book on a political figure that Id never really heard of, but who seems to have been instrumental in the regimes of France in the early 19th century For those of you who are fans of Machiavelli, Fouch may interest you a great deal.

This is tough Zweig s Fouche is brisk, well crafted, and immensely readable He presents the life of one of history s most successful and duplicitous intriguers in a way that s dramatic and stylish, as all his writing tends to be This is not history as you remember it in school and yet, it s also not exactly history It sof an ode, a celebration, which is strange since Fouche was such a slippery, mendacious figure What is there to celebrate Well, not much Zweig s narrative certainly This is tough Zweig s Fouche is brisk, well crafted, and immensely readable He presents the life of one of history s most successful and duplicitous intriguers in a way that s dramatic and stylish, as all his writing tends to be This is not history as you remember it in school and yet, it s also not exactly history It sof an ode, a celebration, which is strange since Fouche was such a slippery, mendacious figure What is there to celebrate Well, not much Zweig s narrative certainly makes for an entertaining story, though. But this is also the problem To build the plot, Zweig emphasizes aspects that are at best ungenerous and at worst untrue This is most noticeable in the first of the book s conflicts, with Robespierre, but coming so soon it casts a doubtful shadow over the rest of the book From the beginning, Zweig portrays Robespierre as a political pundit might one dimensional, power hungry, evil It makes sense from a technical perspective of course Fouche needs to face off against a monster But historically it s off Robespierre was neither the demon that the Thermidorians including Fouche made him out to be after 9 Thermidor nor the blood drinking stereotype that most textbooks rely on As R.R Palmer s The Twelve Who Ruled, written only a decade after Zweig s book, points out, Robespierre was one of twelve men on the Committee of Public Safety, albeit the most eloquent It was Robespierre who recalled the Committee s most reckless deputies, like Carrier and Fouche, and, as other historians have pointed out, interceded on behalf of the purged Girondins He was fierce and uncompromising in his beliefs, but he was hardly a dictator.Zweig s Robespierre possesses none of the nuance of the real man In this version, he and Fouche find themselves locked in a fateful struggle, which builds to a crescendo and serves as the primary reason for Robespierre s downfall I m not saying neither was suspicious or worried about the other, but you d almost think there was nothing else going on from Zweig s account Robespierre s withdrawal from the Convention is presented as a planned ruse, a way to create a speech that will undermine Fouche, when most historians Palmer, Tackett, Linton, McPhee agree that Robespierre was mentally, physically, and spiritually overwhelmed by this point in the revolution.Having read The World of Yesterday and loved it, I was hoping to get abalanced and insightful view of Joseph Fouche This was engaging and entertaining, well structured and well written But as for objective, I m not sure I can say that, at least not for the first third of the book If you are interested in reading anuanced, but still highly readable, account of that timeframe, I highly recommend The Twelve Who Ruled

More of a 2.5 Beautifully executed biography about this half unknown by me historical figure

  7. says:

An epic account of the incredible life of a political mastermind, a true shape shifter who followed the majority faster than anyone else His purely machiavelian character, full of contradictions, put him in direct contact with many great historical figures, such as Robespierre, Napoleon or Carnot A definite must read, which should trigger a deep desire to learnabout the French Revolution and the following period.

  8. says:

A thoroughly researched biography Zweig was so gifted in the writing of biographies In this book you follow not only Fouch s story but how Bonaparte became Napoleon A living part of the French history.
