I like historic fiction, and I like historic non fiction, so this book was a welcome change from the fantasy books that have been in my to read pile, and from all the scholarly articles I have been reading for my International Relations degree The fact that this is a graphic novel is especially nice, it s like a flashback to my comic book collecting days, only on a muchserious novel It is a bit like reading a screen play or story board, and it would be interesting to hear if Christopher I like historic fiction, and I like historic non fiction, so this book was a welcome change from the fantasy books that have been in my to read pile, and from all the scholarly articles I have been reading for my International Relations degree The fact that this is a graphic novel is especially nice, it s like a flashback to my comic book collecting days, only on a muchserious novel It is a bit like reading a screen play or story board, and it would be interesting to hear if Christopher ever decided to have some voice actors turn this into a dramatic podcast.I showed my 10 year old son the book when he came home from school, and he was very interested and is in line after his elder sister to get a thorough look at the book Last night at bedtime, he hijacked my book because he was so interested and I had to wait to get it back It will very likely be one of the books that he does for his weekly reading homework.I really like how quickly the story progresses, and the viewpoint of having the story told by Ari as a grandfather to his grandchild about what he went through Some of the costumes drawn had me double checking modes of dress on habit As far as I was able to tell, the costumes were accurate for the time period, and he did a good job of showing a range of economic levels of the various families in the stories.I found Ari s thankfulness over having someone granddaughter actually interested in his history as especially poignant A very large amount of our elders have fascinating stories from their past, but are being lost every day because we as a culture do not slow down to listen to them.Christopher did a very good job with his research I was glad to see that he mentioned the truce between Hitler and Stalin, and how Hitler turned on Stalin It is refreshing to see someone of this age group with such a voracious appetite for history, and even better to see him sharing the knowledge in a way that his peers can relate to.The story takes place in Poland, so we get to see how Poland which was neutral changed during World War 2, how Jew turned on Jew, that not all Nazis were bad at heart One of the Nazis depicted in the story was actually a huge surprise to me, and it is hard to catch me off guard Of course, by the end we have followed through Ari s experiences at Auschwitz That period of his life I know that there are editors that would say it was over the top but given where and when, these experiences are very believable and well done I say this with confidence as someone that has studied WWII since I was around Christopher s age though there is always stillto learn about it Some readers might find the depiction of the Germans as too negative, but the reader is encouraged to remember that the story is being told through the viewpoint of someone that lost everything save his life, and the viewpoint fits with the experiences related. The art style fits the tone and voice of the story very well, and is very impressive given that all was done with pencil and paper by the author The font Christopher used was custom made, basing it on his own handwriting My daughter identified with the book very well because of his handwriting and being able to think of him as a peer This helps in making the book an excellent educational tool, bypassing some of the blocks that I saw other students encountering when I was in the teen and younger age bracket.I thought that the story was tastefully done, especially for someone that did not experience the horrors firsthand I found this just as interesting and informative as Diary of Anne Frank, Journey to Topaz or The Samurai of Gold Hill I plan to show our school Principal the book for consideration for their library I can t say enough good about this book I sincerely hope that he decides to do other projects like this one There are so many other aspects about WWII that he could also cover such as the Asian American internment camps like the one in Tulelake, CA for example, or how Chinese officials that had been in Germany helped sneak out Jews from that country or other points in history If he decides to do other books, which I sincerely hope that he does, I certainly will be watching for them.Teachers you want this book for your students.Later today I will finish up and post a video review on my Youtube account, and my daughter intends to do one as well to give her impression
