The premise is amazing, and very compelling, but something happened to this novel that just would not let it work David is an incongruent character from beginning to end He is violent and freakishly strong when needed in the story, but a pacifist coward when it comes to his personality traits trying to make him likable, perhaps He is in love with the only woman of the book just because she s there and because she is pretty The rest of the characters have amazing potential but in the end c The premise is amazing, and very compelling, but something happened to this novel that just would not let it work David is an incongruent character from beginning to end He is violent and freakishly strong when needed in the story, but a pacifist coward when it comes to his personality traits trying to make him likable, perhaps He is in love with the only woman of the book just because she s there and because she is pretty The rest of the characters have amazing potential but in the end come to nothing, because the story is all over the place There are at least five enemies in the book, everybody is after David and his group, everything that can go wrong goes wrong In such a setting, when you finally get to the main villain, he is blandly generic and unoriginal Two of the main characters get killed just because the story needed a body count, not a logic set of events If logic was followed here, everybody would ve been dead by page 200 The final mystery of the story gets very conveniently solved When Tockland needs to be an almighty empire, it is When it needs to crumble just by the will of the main characters, it does Damn, even the horrible creature goes and dies on its own so our main characters don t have to worry about it A powerful army becomes clumsy and incapable when the heroes make their advance The terrifying, extremely armed villain is killed by a 17 year old kid afraid of guns and blood who just a week before was too afraid of talking back to his mom but in 7 days time killsthan any main character on The Walking Dead, while remaining afraid of guns and blood, by the way.I m all up for crazy, different stories I love characters that break the usual stereotypes and defy all expectations But Shadows of Tockland went out of control The characters and the world building ended up making no sense I felt like the author inserted in this story everything that he wanted to see with no regard of wether it made sense or not And I m ranting this badly because I think the core of the story is really great I love the idea, I just hate the execution
