I like Spencer Hill Press anthologies The stories they contain are usually full of surprise and delight, which are the two main characteristics I look for in my reading As well, they are handsomely designed, which makes them nice to look upon And, I m not just saying that because I have a second short story in a Spencer Hill anthology although I am admitting this up front so cynical readers can adjust their expectations of this review accordingly.Their latest collection is called Doorways I like Spencer Hill Press anthologies The stories they contain are usually full of surprise and delight, which are the two main characteristics I look for in my reading As well, they are handsomely designed, which makes them nice to look upon And, I m not just saying that because I have a second short story in a Spencer Hill anthology although I am admitting this up front so cynical readers can adjust their expectations of this review accordingly.Their latest collection is called Doorways to Extra Time It is about what people would do if they had extra time in their lives to play around with, and the consequences of their actions during that time and or having the extra time to begin with As you might imagine, some of the stories involve time travel, but by no means all of them as with last year s UnCONventional, the writers go off in all directions As you might tell from the Dali melting watch in the keyhole on the cover which is also used for the page numbers inside the book , overall the anthology has a Twilight Zone feel to it which, among other things, means that the stories tendtowards fantasy and magic realism than science fiction, but, as a fan of the original series, I find there s nothing wrong with that. The book had many highlights for me Melina Gunnett s Of Cats and Coins and Martin Feekin s Moondance were wonderful urban fantasy stories that went in directions I could not have anticipated Anthony Francis The Doorway to Extra Time put a marvelous steampunk spin on time travel stories In aserious vein, Between the Pages, Layla Comes of Age by Brenda Moguez was a lovely story about a young girl connecting with her dead mother through a shared capacity for time travel There was also a story because this is a spoiler, I won t tell you which one, except to say that it wasn t mine that astonished me by setting up a time travel conceit and laying out the consequences of engaging it for the main character, who then decides not to use it I didn t think that was possible My story, Time, And Again, is about a deal with the devil where the worst evil does not come from Satan, but from the human heart Or, something like that It s hard to come up with a new twist on deal with the devil stories, but, of course, the challenge is what makes it worth trying Doorways to Extra Time is not a perfect book I found that the range of stories wasn t quite as broad as it was in UnCONventional And, while the alternation of long and short stories did give the book as a whole a rhythm, it became a bit predictable I would have suggested that about two thirds of the way through, there be two long and two short stories just to keep readers on their toes. But, these are minor quibbles Doorways to Extra Time is an anthology that contains many wondrous tales I enthusiastically recommend it

Who knew there were so many doorways to time Actually, time being what it is, I suppose there should be an infinite number, but the 20 here offer as diverse a selection of entry points as we could want.Let s immediately get out of the way the awkward fact that the anthology includes a story by me We can skip quickly over that, except to say I think it sits quite comfortably here, whichthan anything is a testament to attentive and conscientious editors Anthony Francis and Trisha Wooldridg Who knew there were so many doorways to time Actually, time being what it is, I suppose there should be an infinite number, but the 20 here offer as diverse a selection of entry points as we could want.Let s immediately get out of the way the awkward fact that the anthology includes a story by me We can skip quickly over that, except to say I think it sits quite comfortably here, whichthan anything is a testament to attentive and conscientious editors Anthony Francis and Trisha Wooldridge. The content spans short, sharp snapshots that linger in the mind and longer pieces ranging from urban traumas to modern fairy tales, dark comedy and sparkling steampunk. It s difficult to pick highlights, but let s give it a go Kate Saturday s You Kids Have It Easy is a little Bradburyesque gem, and there are undertones of Ray Bradbury again in Jenny Moore s Summer Shadows, which cannot be bad.Ira Nayman s comic Time, And Again starts by letting us think we re in for a romp, but leaves us with one of the darkest images of time travel in the book.Anthony Francis The Doorway to Extra Time drops us into a fully formed alternate history that would be a great place to visit even without the time travel device that opens the door to a near infinite stream of alternatives.Trisha J Woodridge s poem, Love Song for an Immortal, probably wasn t written with the Doctor in mind, but it could have been, and what s a time travel anthology without at least a hint of the Time Lord, particularly this year Best title has to go to Brenda Moquez s Between the Pages Layla Comes of Age It s so evocative you can imagine a dozen stories before reading the one Brenda actually presents.I could go on There isn t a story here that doesn t have merit skipping nimbly over mine again, of course.A recurring conclusion seems to be that extra time comes at too high a price, and that simply using the time we have better might be healthier for body and soul That s fair enough, but a couple of extra hours to read this anthology again would be nice Now, which method to choose time machine, arcane ritual, internet app
