I was intrigued by the title of this book I can t tell you what I was hoping to discover, but I can tell you that the topics covered in this book are not to be swallowed in one helping Philosophy, psychology, quantum mechanics, meditation, language, relation, experience, yoga, culture, and good vs evil are all topics covered throughout the chapters Before I read the book, I was skeptical that ALL of these subjects could be covered in book that is barely over 200 pages.I started with the intro I was intrigued by the title of this book I can t tell you what I was hoping to discover, but I can tell you that the topics covered in this book are not to be swallowed in one helping Philosophy, psychology, quantum mechanics, meditation, language, relation, experience, yoga, culture, and good vs evil are all topics covered throughout the chapters Before I read the book, I was skeptical that ALL of these subjects could be covered in book that is barely over 200 pages.I started with the introduction, which the author describes as a must read I usually hate reading introductions because they re dry and boring and you just want to get through it and start the damn book already But this one was different than most I was evenintrigued by what I was about to delve into with this book after finishing the introduction and finding this quote by Aldous Huxley There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception This quote by Huxley sums up this book better than any review or blurb could ever do.Even though it s is only 213 pages it took me a couple of months to read it The best approach to this book is to read slow and ponder what Umphlett has to say about topics that, admittedly, I often feel are out of my realm of complete understanding The author is NOT telling you what to see or even what to believe He does a great job of comparing and contrasting different viewpoints as well as pointing out flaws in our cultural thinking and understanding I found myself circling and underlining passages and pages in this book for future reference There are also many profound quotes by thinkers, philosophers, and wise men that reinforced the point of view of the Umphlett My copy is now dog eared and marked up and I have no plans to loan it out or ever give it away.If I had to pick a favorite chapter, it would be Chapter 19 Love One night I skipped forward and landed on this chapter and decided to read it out of order something I rarely do and I was dumbfounded by what I read I ended up reading this chapter twice just in case I missed something the first time Love as the pure joy of living is not an attachment to others or the pleasures, sentiments, and objects of the world Love as the pure joy of living is an energy that will pour into the lives of others, as their love pours into youexpansive and reciprocal I can t recommend this book highly enough to the person willing to have an open mind to new ideas and different cultural norms You will not be pushed into a certain way of thinking by this book, but you ll start to learn that you have the power to perceive your world a whole lot different Take your time and savor every page of this book
