of meat on this book.BASIC SUMMARYWillie Nelson took Marsha to prom and had unprotected sex with her They were both 18 They weren t dating, this was a one time thing When she comes to him to tell him she is pregnant, he tells her to get an abortion Then he doesn t see her for fifteen years. She is a pastor s daughter she couldn t go through with the abortion She moved to California and had the baby, raised it, got her Master s and her doctorate Now her pastor father is dying of prostate cancer She is going to be staying in Stagecoach for two and a half months and she writes Willie Nelson a letter informing him that he is the father of 14 year old Ryan.ANALYSISThere s a lot to analyze here As is typical with Thomas s books CREEPING MISOGYNYThomas didn t strike me as misogynistic But some of her later books like Twins Under the Christmas Tree have had some surprising misogynistic bits This is no exception I wonder if she thinks it makes her male voices soundrealistic This book opens with Willie Nelson basically calling the mother of his child a slutMarsha s not a slut Buck jabbed his finger in the air If she had sex with me on the first date there s no telling who she slept with before she went off to collegepg 12This is getting me off on the wrong foot with the hero Later there is almost a full page long discussion about the heroine s boobs Why WHY I don t want to read about this It s gross Marsha whispered in Ryan s ear Buckle bunnies Buckle what s Most teenage boys drooled over pretty girls in tight T shirts and skinny jeans, but not Marsha s son Ryan would rather bury his head in a book than chase after the opposite sex As a teacher she appreciated his thirst for knowledge, but as a mother she worried he was missing out on the best part of his youth first crushes and first kisses. pg 36OK, one what kind of mother INTRODUCES her 14 year old son to the idea of buckle bunnies Like, introduces the topic and explains it to him WTF Teaching misogyny to your son Trying to make your son think sexually about grown women What It would be one thing if her son ASKED about the women, but no, she POINTS THEM OUT and delights in explaining them to her son.Obviously, Marsha has internalized a lot of misogyny as we see in this passage As Marsha studied the bunny in front of her painted on jeans, rhinestone belt and designer boots a burning sensation exploded inside her chest Afterthan a decade, she still found Will attractive and hated the idea of him being with an empty headed beauty She knew from experience that some men were intimidated by smart women, but she refused to play the role of a dumb blonde to land a date. pg 37OK Where to start Those buckle bunnies are human beings with feelings and lives, emotions and concerns Two, assuming women are sexually promiscuous because of the way they dress FAIL Three, assuming these women are stupid What gives These women are pretty, and she s pretty, but she s different then them because What s insane is that she had a kid out of wedlock at the age of 18 Society and people probably have some negative labels to give her, so why is she so judgmental and hateful towards other women I would prefer if she displayed compassion and kindness and self awarenessOnce I got a glimpse of what was under your dress, I forgot all about Linda Snyderpg 140Wow, that s disgusting I was really worried because for about 2 3 of the book it seems the only thing that Willie and Marsha can say about each other is She He is really hot I was beginning to think this was only about lust and fucking Which isn t romantic or loving Luckily, that changed by the end, but it was rough going there for a while.CHRISTIANITYMarsha s father is a pastor, so there s a lot of Christianity talk in here I think it s good, better than a Christian romance novel e.g Love Inspired because it srealistic Pastor Jim is a good man, but he isn t perfect And he doesn t always practice what he preaches Marsha had been a good daughter through the years but having a child out of wedlock had hurt and embarrassed the pastor in front of his parishioners and members of the community Nonetheless, he was a loving man and had forgiven her and embraced his grandson for that she d always been grateful. This was tricky Her father would bend over backwards to help a person in need and his actions always demonstrated his faith However, years ago she d learned that the man she d believed walked on water was human and possessed prejudices like everyone else I didn t tell you, because I knew you disliked the Cash family He stopped walking I ve never said You called them heathens the night I told you I was going to the prom with Will Marsha had gotten a glimpse her father s humanness that evening He d spouted a fiery speech, insisting she was too good for the likes of a Cash boy She d never heard him talk that way before but that night he hadn t been a pastor he d been a father, trying to protect his only child and he d let nothing stand in his way Not even God. pg 45Pastor Jim and Willie Nelson get in a lot of fights But to his credit, Willie Nelson goes toe to toe with him and doesn t back down from Jim s bullyingI m not surprised you didn t offer to marry Marsha, he said But I am surprised that you didn t want to raise your child Marsha hadn t told the whole truth to her father If Will was any kind of man at all, he needed to own up to his actions even though his honesty wouldn t earn him points with the pastor He shoved a dirty hand through his sweat dampened hair I told your daughter to get an abortionpg 70He s on the front porch with the twins, showing them books on his Kindle Ryan can t go anywhere without that damned thing As soon as he spoke the words, Will realized his mistake. The pastor s eyes narrowed Are you opposed to reading or just education in general The slap in the face, although deserved, sent Will reeling It was bad enough that he only possessed a high school diploma when the mother of his son had earned a doctoral degree All I m saying is that there sto living than burying your head in a book The pastor nodded to the bunkhouse What exactly has all that worldly experience gained you Will braced himself for an argument that had been fourteen years in the making The pastor had never been able to give Will a piece of his mind because Marsha had kept Will s identity a secret up until now Like any protective father the pastor felt justified in knocking Will down a peg or two for getting his daughter pregnant You and your brothers don t know the value of an education In self defense, Will lashed out Book learning is great but man s inventions would be useless without workers to build them The pastor nodded as if conceding a point to Will College isn t right for everyone, but it is right for Ryan I better not ever hear that you tried to talk my grandson out of earning a higher degree I don t want you glamorizing construction work, rodeos or whatever else you do for fun Ryan has the right to make his own decisions about his future If he asks why I didn t go to college, I ll tell him that a person can learn a lot from books and teachers, but until you do the work yourself like pound nails and saw boards you ll never appreciate how complex and remarkable something as simple as a house ispg 86Pastor Jim also has problems thinking he can police his daughter and tell her whom she can and can t fuckYour dress is dirty His gaze raked over her I m a grown woman, Dad You re still my daughter and you re the mother of my grandson I expect you to behave appropriately and not his gaze zeroed in on the dirt smudges along the hem of her dress come home looking like a girl who spent the night with a man she had no business being with Stop right there before you say something you ll regretpg 145She s 32 THIRTY TWO She s a mother, she has a job, she has a Master s and a doctorate I think the time of trying to control who she s fucking is past Thomas has Pastor Jim and Marsha have a long, painful talk She s good at long, painful talks And she s good at showing that although the pastor preaches compassion and forgiveness and mercy and he s great at demonstrating it to people in his flock, he has a hard time applying it to his own family And because Aimee Cash had seven children by six different men he thinks she and her children are trash Not very Christian of him ABORTIONThis book has a lot to say about abortion First I thought the book might be anti abortion Willie Nelson rather casually and callously orders Marsha to get an abortion when she tells him she s pregnant Marsha is unable to do that As a pastor s daughter, she is unable to go through with the abortion But as a pastor s daughter, she feels unable to come to her father and tell him she got pregnant out of wedlock So she moves to CA and has the baby She goes through the pregnancy and delivery alone She doesn t introduce her father to her son until he is one year old.And of course, Willie Nelson ends up relieved she didn t abort He wants to be a father to his son, get to know him better, support his dreams etc He s also a different man than he was fourteen years ago.But on the other hand, the book tells us that view spoiler Marsha s mom got pregnant at age 15 by a deacon He stole money from the collection plate to buy her an abortion This illegal, back alley abortion destroyed any chances of Sara getting pregnant again It rendered her infertile hide spoiler By offering us these two views of abortion I think Thomas saves this book from being one note view spoiler Sara s hide spoiler story illustrates why abortion should be clean, legal and accessible Remember LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER I guess people can interpret this in different ways, but that was how I was interpreting it I m not necessarily saying it was a pro choice book, but it certainly wasn t clearly anti abortion, either The horror story view spoiler Sara hide spoiler tells really highlights the need for clean, safe, and legal abortion A burning sensation attacked Will s eyes as he realized this might possibly be the most humbling moment of his existence walking alongside the young man whose life he d wanted ended before it had begun. pg 40However, if you are anti choice you might be able to easily read this and think Thomas is also anti choice I don t know, maybe she is The book gives you enough room to allow you to draw whatever conclusions you want to.PARENTINGIt s very difficult for Willie Nelson to bond with a son he is first introduced to at age 14 Thomas really shows this and in a realistic way Compounding matters, Willie Nelson is a view spoiler dyslexic hide spoiler construction worker who has his HS degree, and his son is a bookworm obsessed with Tolkien and plans to go to college at Oxford Willie feels like he isn t good enough for his son Ryan feels like he isn t able to please his father because he s not good at things his father values like outdoor activities and building. But slowly, eventually, these two bond and it s pretty sweet Both have something to offer the other It helps that Willie Nelson is humble and can interact with his son without a chip on his shoulder I know a lot of lesser men would let certain issues come between them and their son due to pride, but Willie Nelson is man enough to set his pride down That s good No one in the book ever tells Ryan his dad wanted him aborted I think that s for the best There s no need for a child to know that I was terrified for the whole book that Pastor Jim would cruelly share this with Ryan, but he doesn t.Marsha also faces a lot of parenting challenges Fear and anxiety about how Ryan and Willie Nelson will interact Fear and anxiety about her father s harsh judgment of Willie Nelson and how that will affect Ryan Mix the fact that her father is dying of prostate cancer into all that and you have quite a brew of worries.FATHER S RIGHTSWillie Nelson is all bent out of shape and righteously angry over the fact that Marsha didn t tell him she carried her pregnancy to term But I don t think he has a leg to stand on He ordered her to get an abortion alone, I might add and then didn t fucking talk to her or ask her parents about her or follow up with her in any way, shape, or form for FOURTEEN FUCKING YEARS He easily could have He either didn t give a fuck or actively didn t want to know. But to give him credit, he s not angry with Marsha for having Ryan and he s not angry and accusatory that she s only seeking him out now for child support that s not her reason, but a lot of men would assume that and react hatefully He genuinely wants to get to know his son and be a father to him.HOW S THE SEX, CARMEN Sigh I m disappointed in Willie Nelson He has two chances to deliver and he fails on both In both the sex scenes he skimps on the foreplay There s not NO foreplay, but it s scant enough to make me upset And this is portrayed as just dandy It s not dandy The woman is portrayed as ecstatic I felt sorry for her Either put better sex in books or have the heroine demand higher quality sex Marsha later describes the sex as being perfect and I m bashing my head against the wall She has low standards IMO.TL DR This book is really less about romance and love than it is about family, parenting, abortion, Christianity, and adulthood Thomas s strengths include having long, realistic conversations about hard topics She doesn t shy away from making her books full of difficult and complex topics She doesn t shy away from forcing her characters to learn and grow.If you don t mind the romance part of the book being but one thread in a big tapestry, you can enjoy this it s meaty and the characters are complicated and do go on a journey of self discovery. However, if you prefer your romance novels to have the romance front and center, this book might frustrate you Especially since the first two thirds of it are basically saying the only positive thing Willie Nelson and Marsha have to say about each other is You re hot Lust does not a romance make.I think both anti abortion and pro choice readers could enjoy this novel and truly believe Thomas is speaking to their beliefs She does a good job of portraying abortion as a complicated topic, but not coming down on one side or the other with any firmness.I actually think the inclusion of an important character being a pastor and the fact that this book is NOT a Christian novel makes it almostChristian Because it s not Love Inspired or, that is to say, an inspirational romance, it can discuss Christian values and Christian ideas in arational, real life way For instance, it can outright state that no amount of praying is going to cure Pastor Jim s cancer It can discuss the importance of going to church and having a relationship with God without acting like God will fix everything It can clearly show that someone can be a good Man of God but also be human who makes mistakes and sometimes acts cruelly or does the wrong thing Love Inspired or inspirational romance feels the need to coat everything with Jesus and act like Jesus will solve everything and act like being a pastor or going to church makes you a worthier, pure individual than someone who doesn t This book is able to discuss Christianity and God in a positive light without succumbing to those faults.Interesting book Thomas really shines when she focuses on complicated human relationships She introduces a lot of hot topics in here I ve only scratched the surface in my review But it wasn t a perfect book, I could have done without the casual misogyny and the mediocre sex More romance could have also been featured, IMO She kind of puts romance in the background instead of the forefront. But it wasn t boring That s for sure.ROMANCE CATEGORIES Contemporary RomanceCowboy Western Romance Kind of He rodeos occasionally But mainly he s a construction worker.Second Chance Romance Kind of They had a one night stand after prom Not exactly a relationship.STEM Heroine Romance She has a doctorate and teaches chemistry.Non Virgin Heroine Secret Baby More like secret 14 year old He s a Construction Worker She Teaches High School Chemistry and does a little college professor work.NAMES IN THIS BOOK view spoiler Willie Nelson mConway Twitty mIsi fMerle Haggard m MackPorter Wagoner This is my favorite Cash Brothers book so far they just keep getting better There is so much going on, most of it dealing with expectations met and unmet Marsha had had a huge crush on Will when they were in high school But as the preacher s daughter, going out with one of the wild Cash brothers was not possible, until she talked Will s brother into convincing him to take her to the prom That night she put the moves on him and ended up getting pregnant But Will wasn t ready to be a father This is my favorite Cash Brothers book so far they just keep getting better There is so much going on, most of it dealing with expectations met and unmet Marsha had had a huge crush on Will when they were in high school But as the preacher s daughter, going out with one of the wild Cash brothers was not possible, until she talked Will s brother into convincing him to take her to the prom That night she put the moves on him and ended up getting pregnant But Will wasn t ready to be a father so she left Stagecoach to go to college, not telling him that she planned to keep the baby When she needs to return to Stagecoach because of her father s health, she knows she has to tell Will the truth To say that he s shocked is putting it mildly When he compares his life to hers he s not too sure that he has anything to give them, but he wants to try.I felt so bad for Will He had never forgotten Marsha and was stunned to get her letter telling him about Ryan and that they were going to be in Stagecoach for the summer He is determined to get to know his son and try to be a father to him He remembers the terrible feeling of being rejected by his own father and never wants his son to feel that way His initial meeting with her just emphasizes their differences and he feels terribly inadequate Meeting his son only makes it worse Ryan is incredibly smart and is a bookworm Will was diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade and barely graduated from high school He has learned to adapt the way he does things but fears that Ryan will be ashamed of him Meanwhile, Ryan thinks that Will doesn t like him because Ryan doesn t like rodeos and building things Will also has to deal with Marsha s dad s disapproval of him making it even harder for him I loved the way that Marsha stepped in and sent Ryan to spend a weekend with Will without his ereader, expecting that they would have to find a way to communicate It was great to see them start to bond over a shared interest in the way things work It was evenmoving to see the way that Ryan deduced Will s reading problems and how much he wanted to help his father Will also found that his feelings for Marsha were growing as they began to get reacquainted The attraction was still there but he discovered that he wantedthan that His problem was trying to get past the feeling that he wasn t good enough for her Just when he thought that he might be making some progress she would pull back because of her father s attitude This left him feeling worse than ever I really liked the advice that Johnny gave him and that Will was willing to follow it The ending was spectacular.Marsha had been a good girl all through school, fully aware of what was expected of her as the preacher s daughter Her one rebellion was the crush she had on Will I loved the way she got Buck to set up their prom date and then went after what she wanted from him It was just her luck that she ended up pregnant She told Will, but wasn t really surprised by his reaction She didn t tell her parents before she left for college, determined that she would keep the baby and prove to them that she could handle it all She didn t tell them until after Ryan was born, and didn t tell them who the father was Over the next fourteen years she didn t forget Will, but was very careful that he didn t find out about Ryan When her dad got cancer she took Ryan and went back to Stagecoach, determined to finally tell Will about Ryan so they could get to know each other She also had to confess to her parents about who Ryan s father was I have to say that for a preacher who was supposed to be all about God s love, her dad was horribly judgmental, especially considering he didn t really know Will at all It also bothered me that Marsha didn t dostanding up to him in defense of Will She spent an awful lot of time putting her dad s feelings first I did like the way that she was determined that Will and Ryan would spend time together She was really frustrated by the way that Ryan behaved around Will I loved the way that she forced him into it at first and then made it easy for them to spend time together once they had connected Marsha also had her own feelings that she had to come to terms with Now that she had done it, she felt very guilty for not telling Will sooner that she had kept Ryan She also knew that she was falling for him all over again She really wanted to be with Will, but she kept letting her father s attitude come between them I ended up withrespect for her father when she had it out with him and he pointed out some things to her that she hadn t considered. One of the best things about this series is how the importance of family is so clear Whatever else happens, they are always there for each other That makes the trouble between Will and Buck that much worse I m looking forward to the next book, hoping that they are able to make peace with each other

4.5 Stars In this story a man will have to go through a journey get used to being a father, getting to know his son but in the process also prove himself worthy. This is the story that I have read by Ms Thomas and I liked her writing style The chemistry between the main characters is evident from the moment that she gets back to her hometown They are both going to go through some serious things before they can have a happily ever after There were a couple of times that I really wanted 4.5 Stars In this story a man will have to go through a journey get used to being a father, getting to know his son but in the process also prove himself worthy. This is the story that I have read by Ms Thomas and I liked her writing style The chemistry between the main characters is evident from the moment that she gets back to her hometown They are both going to go through some serious things before they can have a happily ever after There were a couple of times that I really wanted to stop reading not because the book was not good but because her father was being so hurtful How could a religious person, a pastor, assume that because Will didn t go to college that he would give his son bad advise But that was not the worst how in the world could he tell his daughter that it was possible that if she got together with him that there was a possibility that she would have to support him When these topics came up I just wanted to give him a piece of my mind Other than those little things I really did enjoy the story and before I knew it there were times that I found myself leaking some tears because they were so hard on William but also because I saw that he was really trying to get to know his son Will and Marsha were together only one night, the night of their prom and having sex without protection ended up having consequences He was not ready to be a father so yes he did let Marsha know that maybe she should have an abortion Marsha was not ready to be a mother but no matter what she couldn t have an abortion so she ended up leaving to California to go to college and never told anyone that she was pregnant Now their son is a teenager and her father is very ill and she knows that she needs to go back home for the summer She also knows that it s time to introduce father and son. Will couldn t believe he had a son and he didn t know what to do I couldn t believe that he actually got into a fight with his brother because of this and actually asked or should I say told him to leave town When that happened I thought he was being an asshat and very selfish Marsha wanted for Ryan to spend time with his father but it seemed that he wasinterested in reading rather than doing things with Will Will and Ryan both believe that they don t like each other but for you know it they end up bonding I enjoyed seeing father and son having a good time and what Ryan wants to do to help his father was just heartwarming But in the background there is Marsha s father telling her that Will is no good also belittling him which I hated I couldn t believe that Marsha was not standing up for herself and doing what her heart ached to do Sooner or later Marsha was going to have to make a decision and Will is determined to show her father that he is worthy. Her Secret Cowboy is the third installment in the Cash Brothers series and I can t wait to read the first two books and of course the other books after this one Overall I found this to be a heartwarming read of a father and son getting to know each other and his parents finding their way to each other again The story flowed smoothly and the characters were well developed You can read this story as a stand alone but in my opinion once you start reading and liking the characters you will want to know their story I enjoyed watching the relationship between Will and Marsha develop in time and I knew that their passion would be wonderful I totally recommend this read Received ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an Honest Review
