Ray Hawkins compiled this beautiful collection of love poetry for his wife Mary on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary The subtitle of the book encapsulates the theme A husband s reflection of falling in love and staying in love with his wife We travel through the years with Ray and Mary from initial attraction to wedded bliss to a shared life that has not only survived through ups and downs, but thrived There is a raw honesty and intimacy about the poems that is refreshing It wa Ray Hawkins compiled this beautiful collection of love poetry for his wife Mary on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary The subtitle of the book encapsulates the theme A husband s reflection of falling in love and staying in love with his wife We travel through the years with Ray and Mary from initial attraction to wedded bliss to a shared life that has not only survived through ups and downs, but thrived There is a raw honesty and intimacy about the poems that is refreshing It was like discovering a stash of someone s private love letters and wondering if you really should be reading them However, I m so glad Hawkins put them in the public forum It s a beautiful expression of how godly love can be passionate as well as caring, companionable, and committed This is a Promise I Can Make You would be an exquisite addition to one s wedding vows There are some beautiful word pictures throughout the collection For example, you are background music enriching my aloneness tuned to your wave length my heart hears no other s music no siren s song p 77 I love the humour of The Wife s Returning where the husband gets in a tizz restoring the house to order, only to discover his wife has organised cleaning for the following morning There is good use of repetition in some poems, such that a number of them could easily be set to music e.g., Mary, My Mary, Come with Me Maybe that can be Hawkins next project If this book was viewed purely as a poetry collection, some critique could be offered For example, the style of the poems could bevaried and some of the rhymes could be fresher There was also the occasional lapse into clich However, as a celebration of marriage, it s a wonderful book that any wife would love for her husband to have written The secret to Ray and Mary s happy marriage is summarised in the title poem We love because God first loved us This book would make a lovely gift for the special person in your life

Three and a half stars The great strength of this collection is that it shows a man deeply in love with his wife after fifty years In our world where so many marriages end up divorce statistics, it is lovely to have a positive example of a lasting, caring marriage This book takes the reader through from the dream to the first meeting and onto falling in love, or as Ray puts it I didn t fall in loveI walked into love It then continues on to getting married and staying married A couple of l Three and a half stars The great strength of this collection is that it shows a man deeply in love with his wife after fifty years In our world where so many marriages end up divorce statistics, it is lovely to have a positive example of a lasting, caring marriage This book takes the reader through from the dream to the first meeting and onto falling in love, or as Ray puts it I didn t fall in loveI walked into love It then continues on to getting married and staying married A couple of lines I really liked in the last poem were love breeds commitmentLove feeds adjustment Maybe ifpeople took those words to heart we would havemarriages and fewer divorces The other thread that comes out very strongly throughout the whole book is not only Ray s deep faith in God and service to Him but also Mary s faith in God and service to Him

The affection Ray has for his wife Mary shines through each and every poem in this collection The ones that stood out for me were Every Day Love, the eponymous We Love Because from which the book takes its name and a couple of comedies in verse The Wife s Returning and You, Me and the Letter V The beautiful reflection O Laama O Laama set in Africa was also a highlight.
