I cannot be entirely objective with this review for a number of reasons First of all, the companion TV series to this book is one of my all time favorites I saw it when it first aired on PBS in companion TV series to this book is one of my all time favorites I saw it when it first aired on PBS in the United States in the early 1980 s My parents would watch it every Sunday night Not only did it broaden my horizons in terms of travels and other cultures, but the series instilled a love of the travel documentary genre and specifically, British travel documentaries that has stayed with me consistently ever since This travel series was very much the start of something for me.So, I watched the TV series on PBS in the early 1980 s, recorded it on VHS when it was rerun in the early 1990 s, and burned my VHS tapes to DVD in the 2000 s So, I know and love this series well.Strange as it may seem, though I ve had this companion book to the series for many years and flipped through it occasionally, it was not until recently that I sat down and read it cover to cover And even now, though I have read it entirely, I have not read it straight through My routine was as follows I watched the TV series itself, one episode every Sunday night, just as I was originally introduced to it Then, during the week read the corresponding chapter in this book However, the series episodes and the books chapters are in a different order I let the series dictate the order that I watched the original broadcast order and then would seek out the chapter in the book.Since each chapter and each episode of the series is written by someone else, it gives the whole experience a varied flavor For the purposes of this overly long review of the book, I ll address it in the order of the book, which begins this way The book opens with a brief introduction by the executive producer of the television series, Roger Laughton Laughton talks about the love of trains and train travel in general, and tips a very appropriate hat to author Paul Theroux who was not featured in this book series, but who surely is one of the great train travel writers of all time. That is followed by the Deccan chapter in India by Brian Thompson Thompson s episode of the TV series is one of my favorites, and his chapter in the book follows it rather closely, with little insights that viewers of the series were not aware of who knew he got so sick in Mysore for example. The next chapter is on the Zambezi Express in South Africa by Michael Wood Wood has proven himself to be quite a scholar and historian since the time that this was written, and his chapter in the book one of his earliest efforts does not disappoint It too follows along rather closely to the corresponding television episode, going into slightlydetail with all of the historical facts Still, you can see that he probably wrote his chapter in the book first, and then wrote the narration for the episode afterwards, based on this text This chapter episode is a real historical document as South Africa has changed considerably since Wood took that trip Fascinating viewing and interesting reading.Next up is The Long Straight in Australia by Michael Frayn and adapted and edited by Dennis Marks Frayn is the only traveler who didn t write his own chapter in the book This is slightly ironic as his name is always listed first when the authors of this book are listed I was extremely curious to read this as this was my least favorite episode of the TV series Australia is a fascinating place, but somehow the TV episode comes off as boring I m pleased to say that the chapter in the book redeems it somewhat, and though it covers the same territory, it wasinteresting Could this perhaps be because it was adapted and edited by someone other than Frayn himself Maybe I know that Frayn is a highly respected reporter, columnist, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, etc but I am just not a fan of his episode of the TV series Coast to Coast in the United States by Ludovic Kennedy is the premiere episode of the TV series and a great chapter in the book As with Thompson s Deccan, we follow along closely with the TV episode, yet gain little insights that viewers of the episode alone were not aware of Three Miles High in South America by Miles Kington is also especially interesting reading in that it is quite different from the TV episode Of course it follows along on the same journey, but Kington has definitely written his book chapter from scratch no hints of his narration of the TV episode are here That makes it an overall extremely nice companion piece to the episode the same general journey, yet told in a very different manner, and some insights into the production which are always interesting and welcome This might be the most insightful chapter of the book Confessions of a Train Spotter in Britain by Michael Palin comes next It came as no surprise to me when Michael Palin began his many wonderful travel series with Around the World in Eighty Days in the latter half of the 1980 s, because I remembered him so fondly from this Like the TV episode, the written chapter is a thoroughly engaging read, and unlike any of the other authors, Palin gives us some insight into how he was approached to participate in the episode There are also some hints of insight into its production That was especially fascinating to me and this TV episode book chapter is another favorite. And finally, Changing Trains in Europe by Eric Robson This is the final episode of the TV series, and the final chapter of the book There are big sections of this chapter which, like Miles Kington, Robson clearly wrote from scratch Then there are other large sections which come directly from his narration of the TV episode I ve traveled by train in a fair number of the locales featured in this chapter, so I especially enjoyed it Included in each chapter of the book are some wonderful black and white photos some full page , as well as one section of color photos in the center of the book Would I appreciate this book as much as I do if I didn t already love the TV series Very tough to say I think that the book is compelling, but it and the TV series both compliment each other extremely well They are two sides of the same coin and the formula of British made travel TV series and an accompanying book has been successfully followed by Michael Palin and other incarnations of Great Railway Journeys in the years since I could be wrong, but I think that this book and TV series was the first such pairing.Anyway, the Great Railway Journeys of the World book and TV series are now inseparable to me If you like one, you should make an effort to check out the other I don t often give five out of five stars to a book, but for the sum of the whole as opposed to the individual parts , this one deserves it.Long out of print, the book is easy to find inexpensively on , but do make sure that you buy the British version with the color painting of the train moving across the landscape on the cover The U.S version has smaller photos and is missing the section of color photos altogether but that U.S version is available as an eBook for free borrowing over on Open Library
