This book was not what I expected I anticipated a dry historical account of WWll with perhaps some futuristic fantasy thrown in but was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was the account of the Von Stauffer family's activities full of twists and turns the author also writes mysterypolice proceedurals but the historical facts were presented in a way that appealed to me a neophyte when it comes to the history of this time period I learned a lot about how Hitler came to power and how the German people were hoodwinked into believing in him What I thought was black and white showed itself many times to be somewhere in between The characterizations of Hitler and his henchmen brought them to life for me I have since read the other books in this series and find the story not to be so much about the horrors of war but about how sad to say even the losers sometimes win but in different ways

After reading this fiction book I came away with a better understanding of how Hitler came to power The book was filled with dates names and facts about the SS and the power struggle between them and the brownshirts I almost forgot it was a fiction book until the last several pages when the plot for the next book is introduced
