I was surprised to note that despite the kindle cover revamp this was first published in 1983 during the good old days of rampant sexism and casual sexual harassment in the work place This surprise was because, except for some classically awful clothing descriptions and the boss smoking in the office, I couldn t tell it apart from arecently written story I think that pretty much says it all for category romance when you can t tell that 30 years of societal progress has taken place.I m I was surprised to note that despite the kindle cover revamp this was first published in 1983 during the good old days of rampant sexism and casual sexual harassment in the work place This surprise was because, except for some classically awful clothing descriptions and the boss smoking in the office, I couldn t tell it apart from arecently written story I think that pretty much says it all for category romance when you can t tell that 30 years of societal progress has taken place.I m kind of at a loss as to why Alex falls for Jared in this since he was a huge arse for 80% of the book and the first half seems to involve a lot of sexual harassment with him using his position as her boss to get her alone and feel her up Deeply unsexy He does improve really close to the end and seems to become a caring, sweet guy, but even then it s hard to reconcile that person with the man who we ve previously read doing some really creepy stuff, like trying to undress Alex in semi public settings, grinding his erection against her at all opportunities, and licking her face Alex doesn t help her case much by telling him to stop touching her and leave her alone a few times and then suddenly deciding to just have angry sex with him Because in Romanceland hormones are crazily powerful and women can not resist them when there s the slightest chance babies are in the offing Even the women who don t want kids Plus in Romanceland contraceptives have a shockingly high failure rate that may actually increase the chance of pregnancy. The one thing I really liked about this novel was the female bodyguard angle I ve only come across it on two other occasions and I have to say that I do find it adorable to read about the ever practical, tough as nails, ex military types finding love and gruffly trying to express it without knowing how to do it normally It always seems fargenuine than the gushing sentiment in other romance novels.Still, despite the awfully dated content the writing wasn t really that objectionable It had an easy flow to it and I found myself reading along almost in spite of myself It wasn t enough to save the book for me, but it does seem to indicate that perhaps the author s later work her Hex series for example may be worth checking out if I want something light and PNR themed
