Richard Grenier s opening essay struggles with the original Star Wars trilogy as both brilliant and troubling I grew up on these movies but I did not have similar struggles until the HAN SHOT FIRST controversy in the Special Edition releases Grenier saw these problems in the original material by the second film What bothered me about fundamentally changing Han Solo began for Grenier when Lucas changed the series from a series into a serial Instead of the hero triumphing at the end of each in Richard Grenier s opening essay struggles with the original Star Wars trilogy as both brilliant and troubling I grew up on these movies but I did not have similar struggles until the HAN SHOT FIRST controversy in the Special Edition releases Grenier saw these problems in the original material by the second film What bothered me about fundamentally changing Han Solo began for Grenier when Lucas changed the series from a series into a serial Instead of the hero triumphing at the end of each installment Empire gives us a cliffhanger More importantly, the heroes don t win again until they get to blow up another death star in the 3rd film Much is made here of interviews with Lucas before the release of Star Wars where he was comfortable with this being an old fashioned adventure film for kids The interviews leading up to Empire gave a different picture of the series and his ambitions Whether the success of the Star Wars made him either pretentious or self conscious the viewer will never quite know and Empire is such an interesting film his change in outlook both made the second film better than it should have been and at the same time threw the series off kilter where it hasor less been ever since This book was published in 1991 and the essay was written in 1980 and yet it foreshadows all the reasons why us Generation X kids hated the prequels that were still almost 20 years to come The second essay is a comparison of two films released at the same time, Breaker Morant, the highest grossing Australian film at the time and Fort Apache The Bronx These were two movies I remember as a kid without having seen either one Grenier uses the movies to contrast views on the questions of the military and police, institutions that are meant to protect us, but are nonetheless controversial in post Vietnam era This is an essay that reminded me of Peter Biskind s book on the 1950s that broke themes and attitudes down to politics For this Grenier thinks Breaker Morant an excellent morality tale in its complexity and Fort Apache, a film that portrays the grim life in the Bronx well, but misses the essence of being a cop.The third is a long piece on Warren Beatty s Reds, a movie I have seenthan once The idealism about communism was always strange to me and yet Beatty makes it compelling somehow Grenier explains that Beatty had been working on the life of John Reed since the 1960s and he had already spent so much money that he had to make a film Reagan s era was probably the worst timing for such a movie and Beatty himself was less idealistic about Reed than he had been Grenier does a good job here of explaining something he calls the Zelda dication of women married to prominent men in which they are presented as deeper and almost as brilliant as their husbands even when it s not even close Diane Keaton s Louise Bryant character is such a woman At every turn Beatty makes her brilliant and independent and talented whereas the real Bryant was a social climber who used her looks as currency Jack Nicholson earns much praise here for his portrayal as the reasoned Eugene O Neill that sees the revolution business as bunk Grenier believes this view was closest to Beatty s own by the time he made the film explaining that his one time affection for George McGovern was replaced by Pat Moynihan, a member of the opposite wing of the same party Grenier likes Ridley Scott Blade Runner and Alien impress him He doesn t get Spielberg at all E.T Doesn t work for him The Color Purple is fantasy Empire of the Sun forgets history His piece on the marketing of European films that transitions into the mystery of how Rainer Werner Fassbinder made so many films without any talent is hilarious and wise There is a great long essay on Richard Attenborough s Gandhi film and how the real Gandhi was nothing like the Ben Kingsley portrayal The Mechant Ivory team s adaptation of Henry James s the Bostonians subverts James s story by making a hero out of the wrong character I just don t know if anyone has ever been better at exposing artistic pretensions Orwell was good at this, but Orwell wasn t funny Grenier is so funny that you start to feel bad for the pretentious But then you laugh at the next sentence too He doesn t make it easy for someone to be an apologist for worldwide Marxism This comes through too in two essays on the international PEN club where reflexive Marxism may not be necessary for entry but it would certainly make a member feelat home It always seems the most deceitful people who think their role is to impart Great Truth
