Thanks to Tolkien scholar Douglas A Anderson for turning me on to this brilliant book It was a long search to find a copy of and well worth it This is a book by a true Inkling who studied under C.S Lewis to whom this book is dedicated and knew J.R.R Tolkien Indeed Tolkien seems to have included a fictionalised version of Lancelyn Green in his unfinished novella The Notion Club Papers in the character of Wilfrid Trewin Jeremy who was said to have written books on the history and critic Thanks to Tolkien scholar Douglas A Anderson for turning me on to this brilliant book It was a long search to find a copy of and well worth it This is a book by a true Inkling who studied under C.S Lewis to whom this book is dedicated and knew J.R.R Tolkien Indeed Tolkien seems to have included a fictionalised version of Lancelyn Green in his unfinished novella The Notion Club Papers in the character of Wilfrid Trewin Jeremy who was said to have written books on the history and criticism of Ghost Stories, Time Travel and Imaginary Lands Sauron Defeated, p 159 The last type of book mentioned is just what this book is a historical exploration of how authors from Lucian of Samosata in the 2nd century to Francis Godwin, Aphra Benn and up to Jules Verne, H.G Wells and C.S Lewis himself used the traveller s tale trope of journeys to distant planets especially the Moon, Mars and Venus as a world building element of their fiction One of the most interesting elements Green explores is the development of the actual fictional mechanism of travel to these planets a topic Tolkien s fictional Notion Club discusses as well which range from bring shot out of canons or high powered rifle or being kidnapped by geese to metaphysical journeys in dreams and even one example of the invention of a snuff so powerful that one whiff blows you to the moon The last chapters cover probably some of the most contemporary analysis of authors like David Lindsay s excellent Voyage to Arcturus, Lofting s Dr Doolittle on the Moon and C.S.Lewis s own Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra all books that I am sure must have been grist for discussion for the Inklings I highly recommend finding a copy of this book and taking the journey with Robert Lancelyn Green

Unlike some literary criticism, this book was fun to read Instead of getting bogged down in tedious interpretation debates, Green simply tells the story of space travel in science fiction with just a touch of humor He mentions works that are quite forgotten In addition, there is a section at the end where he talks about Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra On the whole, if you are interested in the science fiction of the past, I would definitely recommend this book.
