I think of this as the summer job book, but Alice s job as a stock girl at a department store is really only a small part of the plot It s my favorite part, though, because I think Alice s experiences and feelings about work proud to be employed not by her dad, glad to make a paycheck, bored stiff by what she actually has to do, mixed feelings about letting her friends use her employee discount, failure to understand the proper chain of command view spoiler leading to getting unexpectedly I think of this as the summer job book, but Alice s job as a stock girl at a department store is really only a small part of the plot It s my favorite part, though, because I think Alice s experiences and feelings about work proud to be employed not by her dad, glad to make a paycheck, bored stiff by what she actually has to do, mixed feelings about letting her friends use her employee discount, failure to understand the proper chain of command view spoiler leading to getting unexpectedly fired hide spoiler are true to life and may actually impart some useful lessons. The actual ostensible theme for this book is extended family Out of nowhere, Alice is jealous of her friends larger families except Pamela, who s dealing with an unstable mom She wishes Lester would get married so there could be a big family reunion view spoiler Coincidentally, Lester s girlfriend of the book ends up breaking up with him because she mistrusts a man with so little family, and Alice ends up getting her reunion in worse circumstances when her grandfather dies She learns I don t know that she has family after all or something hide spoiler It feels like sort of a random and tacked on theme that doesn t have any resonance for me as a reader If you re happy with your family, I feel like you will believe yours is the best kind, and if you re not, everyone s family looks better Alice seems remarkably happy with her family so it s odd that she feels something lacking.Race is always handled oddly in Alice books why are black characters always described as food , but particularly here, when Lester is dating a Woman of Color, as Alice is fond of saying While there are some cringeworthy moments, I think I overall approve of Alice s ability to confront her own racism and admit some ugly truths about herself But there are certainly some moments of racial weirdness Other memorable parts of this book include a vividly drawn fun in the sun vacation, an Internet prank that betrays only slight misunderstanding of how the Internet works, and some genuine emotion as Alice s friend s cancer diagnosis causes her to experience stronger feelings about her mother s death than she was able to experience at the time

Had to wait a while to get this one picked up from the library The time period of this book Alice s summer between junior and senior year is exactly where I am right now Sixteen Alice got a part time job just like me Just like me, she got it pretty late, in July Of course, Alice can drive and I can t Anyway, it s nice to see the continuation of Alice and her friends and family s lives Some things are a sobering reality Gwen s leukemia diagnosis, Grandpa McKinley s dying but there Had to wait a while to get this one picked up from the library The time period of this book Alice s summer between junior and senior year is exactly where I am right now Sixteen Alice got a part time job just like me Just like me, she got it pretty late, in July Of course, Alice can drive and I can t Anyway, it s nice to see the continuation of Alice and her friends and family s lives Some things are a sobering reality Gwen s leukemia diagnosis, Grandpa McKinley s dying but there s the little moments of beauty too Alice is growing to lookandlike her mother, Marie Loved reading about another of Alice s trips to the beach, now that I know what it s like I wish Patrick were in thisI wish Lester could finally be happy with a girl One thing I will say, though, is that most of the guys Alice hangs out with are absolute jerks Brian, Mark spoiled, entitled idiots Can t wait to see how Alice s junior year goes I know just how she feels when she looks at the scared freshmen at orientation and thinks of herself two years ago, though our orientations are on separate days by grade Lester is definitelymature I liked the exciting scene where Alice caught shoplifters and realized that criminals can look like anything and she shouldn t be too partial or impartial to any group I also hope that Pamela s dad comes around soon and discovers how smart and great Gwen is

I actually really like this one It had a nice balance of teenage drama with real life issues, a line that PRN does not always succeed in walking But this one was genuinely heartwarming and handled Big Issues without being overwrought or sappy I think I m also inclined to enjoy the books that I remember most vividly, and for whatever reason, this one stuck in my mind the trip to the beach, the summer job, even some of the descriptions and imagery I also appreciate the lack of romance in this I actually really like this one It had a nice balance of teenage drama with real life issues, a line that PRN does not always succeed in walking But this one was genuinely heartwarming and handled Big Issues without being overwrought or sappy I think I m also inclined to enjoy the books that I remember most vividly, and for whatever reason, this one stuck in my mind the trip to the beach, the summer job, even some of the descriptions and imagery I also appreciate the lack of romance in this one it s really all about Alice growing up, learningabout herself and friends, being a person I m glad PRN doesn t feel the need to infuse each book with romance and summer flings, especially since that s far from the typical high school experience Definitely one of the better later Alice books

I liked that we get some new aspects in this installment, however, the novel did just not grip me as much as past installments have.
