Eric Hatch wrote both the book on which the original 1936 My Man Godfrey movie was based, and worked with the director on the script for that movie My Man Godfrey was a runaway hit, according to Wikipedia, and had nominations for bests in all for of the top acting categories I didn t know that there was actually a remake of the movie, but the edition I managed to locate of the book was a tie in to that 1957 version, staring June Allyson and David Niven. The book differs slightly from the Eric Hatch wrote both the book on which the original 1936 My Man Godfrey movie was based, and worked with the director on the script for that movie My Man Godfrey was a runaway hit, according to Wikipedia, and had nominations for bests in all for of the top acting categories I didn t know that there was actually a remake of the movie, but the edition I managed to locate of the book was a tie in to that 1957 version, staring June Allyson and David Niven. The book differs slightly from the original movie in plot twist logistics and ending, but the dialog and concepts remain the same The characters in the book are drawn in broad strokes and with little subtlety, but the dialog is fresh and the concept had you not seen the movie highly novel I understand the 1957 movie was a little closer to the book but I m sure it was impossible to repeat the acting gold of the original movie, even with David Niven.Regardless of the movies, I enjoyed the book no matter how many contemporary movies you ve seen and how much history you know, the book can help you with that one comment you missed that turns out to be amazingly funny or maybe not, but it s been bugging you And close captioning doesn t always cover all the dialog in the movie but the book fills in all the plot lines, hooray Glad I got a chance to spend quality time with it

I suppose like most people, I knew this story best from the 1936 screwball comedy starring William Powell reading it from a 1947 bantam edition paperback seemed to enhance the experience I suppose like most people, I knew this story best from the 1936 screwball comedy starring William Powell Carole Lombard I havent seem the movie in a long time, but I remember enough to know that the movie strayed far from the book in some respects, but stayed remarkably faithful in others Reading this was very enjoyable reading it from a 1947 bantam edition paperback seemed to enhance the experience

The book was even better than the movie entertaining, funny and just plain fun The way Godfrey just organizes and takes over the whole family is totally remarkable Mr Hatch did a beautiful job of this book

I read a few pages, got lost in context am non native to the language, the country, and the time , decided to watch the 1936 movie first liked it a lot , then continued with the book. The movie kept the gist of the book while taking a lot of liberties in terms of plot and details but I liked them both Book Godfrey and book Irene are not their movie counterparts, and that s okay, too. While the book is sure enjoyable, I found it tonally patchy at times comedic, at times pensive What s cons I read a few pages, got lost in context am non native to the language, the country, and the time , decided to watch the 1936 movie first liked it a lot , then continued with the book. The movie kept the gist of the book while taking a lot of liberties in terms of plot and details but I liked them both Book Godfrey and book Irene are not their movie counterparts, and that s okay, too. While the book is sure enjoyable, I found it tonally patchy at times comedic, at times pensive What s consistent is that it doesn t take itself too seriously, and each scene is sprinkled with American Golden Era slangs, and layered with a self deprecating hue that translates very well into a screwball comedy movie. The romance Irene is wonderful, Godfrey should have groveled a little , Viola is so ineffective she barely added anything to the story.A short read and a fun one definitely worthwhile

One of the things I love is classic movies especially those from the 30s and 40s And something else I love is to read the book a movie was based on or taken from I ve found some really excellent books that a way.I m sorry, though, that this wasn t one of them. The 1936 movie starring William Powell in the title role and Carole Lombard has to be one of the most ridiculous films ever made Lombard plays a ditz so well it s spooky, and Powell is his usual urbane delight Too, Gail Patrick One of the things I love is classic movies especially those from the 30s and 40s And something else I love is to read the book a movie was based on or taken from I ve found some really excellent books that a way.I m sorry, though, that this wasn t one of them. The 1936 movie starring William Powell in the title role and Carole Lombard has to be one of the most ridiculous films ever made Lombard plays a ditz so well it s spooky, and Powell is his usual urbane delight Too, Gail Patrick as Lombard s sister is wonderfully mean, with some great snarky lines. The book, however, quite obviously contains the germ of the idea with glimpses from which the screenplay was written The movie does follow the basic plot It s a decent read, but I think you ll enjoy the storyby watching the movie.Plus a copy of the movie s a whole lot easier to find than a copy of the book
